International removals from Australia — 2026 guide

Moving overseas from Australia is a different category of move from domestic removals. The decision is primarily about freight method (sea vs air), container type (LCL vs FCL), and timing — with costs that scale steeply by destination distance. Most people moving a full household should budget $8,000–$20,000 for the freight component alone.

For an instant estimate to your specific destination, use the International Moving Cost Calculator. If your visa or eligibility is still in question, check the Visa Eligibility Checker first.

Costs below are for a 2-bedroom household (approximately 35 m³) shipped by sea from Sydney or Melbourne, including origin port fees, sea freight, destination port handling, customs clearance, and transit insurance. Backloading or LCL shipping for smaller homes will be proportionally lower.

Sea freight vs air freight — what most people do

For almost all household moves, sea freight is the practical choice. Air freight for a full 2-bedroom home would cost roughly $80,000–$150,000 — roughly 10× the sea freight cost. The standard approach for international movers is a two-stage strategy:

✈️ Air freight (essentials only)
Send 1–3 suitcases worth of essentials: clothes, laptops, documents, medications, and items you need immediately. Air freight for 50–100 kg from Australia typically costs $500–$2,000 depending on destination.
Arrives: 3–7 days
🚢 Sea freight (household goods)
Ship the bulk of your household goods by sea freight. You'll need temporary accommodation at your destination for the transit period — typically 2–9 weeks depending on the route.
Arrives: 2–9 weeks

LCL vs FCL — which container option suits your move?

Studio / 1-bedroom
10–25 m³
LCL
LCL (shared container) is almost always the most cost-effective for smaller homes. You pay per m³ and don't need a full container.
2-bedroom
25–42 m³
LCL or 20ft
Get quotes for both LCL and a 20ft FCL — at around 30 m³ the cost difference narrows and FCL gives you better goods security and no consolidation delays.
3–4+ bedrooms
42 m³+
20ft or 40ft FCL
A 40ft FCL is almost always the most economical option for larger homes. You avoid the handling fees and waiting time of consolidation, and have a dedicated container.

Before you book: visa and eligibility

International moving timelines depend on your visa approval. Book your container only once you have a confirmed departure date or conditional visa approval. Cancellation and rebooking fees for container shipping typically run $300–$800.
